Basic properties

Poly-L-lactic acid (PLA, polylactic acid) is a synthetic analogue of connective tissue that is extracted from corn or potato starch. Originally, PLA was used in medicine to repair soft tissue deficiencies in AIDS patients.

Sculptra as a medical product based on PLA was introduced in 1999. Until 2004, it was known as "NewFil" and was used as a reliable bioimplant in surgery and dentistry. In medicine, the filler is still used today, but the scope of the powder has significantly expanded due to the entry into the market of beauty products.

In 2004, the product received a new name Sculptra, which speaks for itself: the use of polylactic filler allows the cosmetologist to recreate the ideal facial contours and body proportions, like a sculptor.

What are the main advantages of using Sculptra filler?

The modern French manufacturer of the filler - Sanofi company - has received all kinds of documents confirming the high quality of the product, as well as the approval of the American Association for Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The filler is produced at the factories in Sweden and the USA, its safety and effectiveness in the work is a guarantee of the excellent result of the correction.

Sculptra filler is also called "liquid beauty threads" because the native Poly-L-Lactic acid helps literally "to tighten" your face without surgery in 1-2 sessions.

Unlike common hyaluronic fillers, Sculptra helps not only visually restore the lost volume of the face and body, but also starts the process of neocollagenesis. Thus, the filler based on polylactic acid does not mask, but actually solves the main problem of aging - the destruction of collagen fibers.

Also an important difference from hyaluronic fillers is that Sculptra is a hydrophobic substance, so the real correction of volumes is visible after the first session (no swelling).

  1. First, a dense filler is injected into the middle and deep layers of the dermis, creating the necessary volume and helping to form a youthful facial oval, eliminating ptosis, "jowls", "sagging", wrinkles and folds.
  2. Next, the globular spheres of PLA in the filler begin to fulfill their biological role: the polylactic acid molecules signal the need to heal wounds, although there is actually no physical damage. The body reacts by launching the formation of its own collagen fibers. This is why Sculptra filler is known as a powerful collagen-stimulator.
  3. Over time, the microspheres of the filler biodegrade and are removed from the body naturally in the form of carbon dioxide and water, while the newly formed collagen framework remains, prolonging the effect of the preparation for up to 24 months.

The product contains not only poly-L-lactose, but also the well-known antioxidant mannitol, which prolongs the action of the filler in the tissues.

The list of applications is similar to the applications for fillers based on calcium hydroxyapatite. Due to the high density of Sculptra it is injected into the middle and deep layers of the dermis, so it is impossible to correct the shape and volume of the lips, small wrinkles around the lips or under the eyes, moving area on the forehead with it. Sculptra is used for volumetric modeling and non-surgical vector lift in the following cases:

  • lost volume in the area of the cheeks, cheekbones and chin,
  • "sagging" of the oval, ptosis of tissues,
  • filling of medium and deep wrinkles,
  • sagging of the "beauty triangle",
  • elimination of scars,
  • correction of the volume of the face, neck, arms and body,
  • modeling of aesthetic flaws in the abdomen and thighs.

The consumption of Sculptra varies, it depends on the initial condition of the skin and the goals set for the specialist. The package contains 2 vials of polylactic acid powder, which should be enough for volume correction:

  • Wrinkle Correction - 2 ml,
  • Contour Lifting - 5 ml,
  • Complex correction of age-related tissue degradation on the body (abdomen and thighs) - 10-15 ml.

Sculptra filler combines perfectly with other cosmetic preparations and manipulations, except for permanent implants. The product does not contain animal products, it is tested, safe, and effective in its application.

For an experienced cosmetologist, Sculptra polylactic filler can be a real breakthrough in the quality of work with patients and in achieving impressive results.
